Hi I have just purchased the Droidbox x7 and after a few teething troubles I have managed to get it working ok. My question is how can I get the wired connection working. I have tried connecting it and turned wireless off but then it says I have no connection. I have a netgear DG834g router. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am new to the x7 myself and after only a week don't feel I should give much advice but I went into android settings and turned on the Ethernet switch which was in WiFi settings. Hope this helps.

Thanks I have tried that and it says ethernet is enabled. All it gives is a MAC address but no IP address etc. Does anybody know where I can obtain them as I see an option to use static IP?

I use ethernet and I didn't need to put any passwords or ip address. Try a different cable but if you need ip address then if you have a wireless connection you could find it through that or tap on your mobile phone connection.

Thanks, I will give that a try although the cable does work with my laptop connection. I did think of something else last night but I was tired and went to bed but I can`t remember what it was now. I am sure it will come to me again.

We'll start with the basics (best to be sure :) ).
Have you restarted your modem/router since this problem occurred?
Does your laptop have a manual/static IP address assigned, or do you use DHCP (automatic IP address assignation)?
Is it possible you've accidentally flipped your DroidBOX from DHCP to manual/static mode in the Ethernet settings?

If none of the above helps, let me know the IP address your laptop has when connected via ethernet. From that we can work out what we can insert as manual IP settings on your X7.

Also, to save time, can you let me know the make and model of your modem/router, in case we need to fiddle with settings there later.

Thanks for your advice. Sorry I have not anything yet. To answer your questions. I always turn my router off at night before going to bed. Looking at the info on my router DHCP is on. I did try turning on static mode but turned it off when I realised that id made no difference. I will have to get back to you with the address of my laptop when connected via ethernet. Thank you for your prompt reply.

Re static mode, just checking that this is on the X7 Ultimate, not your modem/router, yes?
In case you don't often get a chance to play with your device, I'll go ahead with some basic instructions now.

First check your modem/router's IP address and your laptop's. (Internal, not your ISP-assigned IP address).
It will probably be something like
192.168.1.1 (for modem/router) and 192.168.1.2 (that 2 could be anything from 2 to 255)
OR
192.168.0.1 (for modem/router) and 192.168.0.2 (that 2 could be anything from 2 to 255) - basically just a change from 1 to 0 in the third number of the IP address.

Now head to the DHCP/Manual area of network settings on your X7 Ultimate, and enter the following (the order and precise labelling could be different depending on your firmware revision)

GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1 (IF YOUR MODEM/ROUTER is actually 192.168.0.1 , use that instead)

SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0 (if you're not asked this, it may have prefilled Network Prefix Length with 24, leave that as it is)

IP ADDRESS: 192.168.1.250 (IF YOUR MODEM/ROUTER was 192.168.0.1 then use 192.168.1.250)

DNS1 and DNS2: You can decide which DNS settings to use. Some people enter just their modem/router's IP address (192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and let the modem/router farm out DNS requests correctly to the actually DNS servers (your ISPs).
Or you can look up your ISP's primary and secondary DNS servers and enter these. OR...
You can use a 3rd party's DNS servers. Most people would either go with Google or OpenDNS.
Google's primary= 8.8.8.8 and their secondary is 8.8.4.4 .
OpenDNS primary= 208.67.220.220 and secondary = 208.67.222.222 .

Please note:
There is the outside chance that instead of 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x your home network is based on a different range, or that your modem/router isn't 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 , but those addresses cover 99% of default setups on home networks.

Also, using 192.168.x.250 is being a bit lazy/naughty, as we should really set up the X7's IP address in your modem/router as static, and remove it from the DHCP pool. However, unless you've got hundreds of devices connected to your home network, a clash isn't likely to occur.

Hi it1s me again. Sorry to trouble you. My Droidbox is working ok apart from two things. 1. The aforementioned ethernet cable problem. When you say to input these settings where do I do that? Do I have to change it to static IP address? If so I did that and nothing was detected. Would it help if I tried to conect my laptop via ethernet to the Droidbox? By the way the router I am using is a Netgear DG834g. The other problem is XBMC. I have tried reinstalling a number of times thinking I have done something wrong but once is has been installed I try to wait the recommended 20 minutes but the box swithes itself to stand by mode. I then restart and go to XBMC and it starts up. Then use the droidbox wizard and fix me now. Once it is working normally I try to close it down and I usually get a script error. One of them is "Randomlastitems.py" and another is "Artistscreensaver" or something like that. Please help me I really dont want to have to return it as it is good for Netflix etc.

Just as an update I connected my laptop to my droidbox and eHomemediaplayer was detected on my network places so I assume that the ethernet port on my droidbox is ok.

Patrico, when you entered the static IP settings into your DroidBOX device, did you scroll down that section and click on the button to save changes?
btw I've got the PN variant of your modem/router at home as a backup, so if we do need to delve into the admin interface of your modem/router, then it should be fairly easy. I'm assuming you've never enabled MAC filtering on it?
In terms of XBMC, I'd follow the procedure here - Resetting XBMC To A "Just Installed" State - and when running the DroidBOX Wizard afterwards, just use the device-specific pack, don't install the Fix Me Now pack as well.

Hi tried inputing static ip settings and saved the changes. When you say about Mac filtering I am using WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key). Does this affect my ethernet settings as the ethernet symbol is showing on the bottom corner of my screen?

Don't worry, MAC address filtering is unrelated to the type of encryption used on your WiFi network.
Every device (well the network adapter to be precise) should have a unique identifier. You can use this ID to only allow certain devices on your network, or allow any except a certain device.
If you're not familiar with the technique (which isn't difficult to defeat anyway) then you've probably not enabled it on your modem/router.
If the ethernet symbol is displayed, presumably your cable is connected? Switching from automatic (DHCP) to manually assigned IP address on your WiFi connection won't alter your cabled connection, no.

Just packing for a week in the Med so won`t be able to try this until I get back. In the meantime thanks for your help. Oh and the reset worked for XBMC which I thank you for. Patrico

Hi just to keep you up to date. My ethernet still doesn`t work on my X7 but as we are hoping to move house soon and will be upgrading our internet i am happy to leave it until after we move as the problem may be with my netgear router (which is quite old). Xbmc is working better since I reverted to frodo and a lot of items seem to be streaming ok. Just want to thank you for your quick and informative replies to my queries.

How can I change my router from automatic (DHCP) to static and will this affect my wireless capabilities?
