Our colleague Mr Catmunky reported an issue recently connected with pop up ads. In his case he believed it was due to a recent android movie app he had downloaded giving es file explorer permissions.

As of today i am seeing pop up ads in both android and kodi. As far as i can see, the only change over the last few days is a new version of es file explorer.
(Coincidentally this also introduced an annoying "new file" on-screen icon which i removed in es tools).

Has anybone else seen this recent behaviour?
I will research and experiment but my finger is pointing at es file explorer right now (i may be wrong)

Other areas i will look at are google play store and clearing chrome history. I'll report back progress.

The es file explorer thing you can stop in es file explorer - settings - general settings - "logger floating widget settings" and unset. So dont need a full reset for that.

Update #1.

Clearing chrome browser history did not help.

Yes thats it.

Update #3
I went into the google settings app and disabled "ads of interest". No effect.

Now downloaded malwarebytes and running.

Update #4

Ran malwarebytes.
Pointed to showbox as malware.
I uninstalled it.
We will wait and see if it is the true cause.
It must have been a "sleeper" if so, because i reinstalled everything earlier this week after the firmware update.

No, show box maybe the cause of the pop up adverts.
The dot on the screen is due to Es file explorer.

(Final?) Update #6

The pop up ads appear to have gone for now.
So main suspect is showbox.

Recommendation: download and run malwarebytes from Google play.
