Trying to use the emulators to play games. I get the system choices & loads of rom options but whenever I launch a rom I get a blue “start” screen and get no further. Can’t be the right start screen either because it always stays the same no matter the platform/game I’m trying to load. I’m admittedly new at some of kodi’s abilities so I’m sure it’s user error. Would love input/help

I have not tried Retroplayer yet so I am not sure what the issue is. It is unlikely that it is a BIOS issue as systems like SNES do not need one. Are the ROM files unzipped? if they have an extension such as .zip .7z .rar etc try extracting them and load the extracted files. I done a quick search and could not find any mention of it apart from this forum post. But you could try on the Kodi forums at https://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=194 there are also some setting up guides there which may help.
