Or should I say the matchstick thing doesn't seem to result in a factory reset.

I can't be sure I heard or felt a click though despite trying over and over for quite some time

If you have an SD card (or microSD card with a physical adapter to make it SD-sized), you could try the procedure mentioned here - http://www.droidboxforums.com/threads/factory-reset-your-imx6.147/ - you'll need to transfer a file or two to the card and repeat the same procedure with the stick.

Yes, even an ancient 128Mb SD card would be fine, however your picture is of a MS (memory stick) card by Sony. It is a different size unfortunately.

Went and bought an SD card this morning (£5 in Asda for those having to do the same), followed instructions but still no change.
