People have tried removing files and running modules from the Xposed Framework, but to no avail. AFAIK our firmwares were all rooted, but there may be some 3rd party images (assuming your iMX6 is more than 12 months old & so the warranty isn't an issue) around.
Now this is in NO way official DroidBOX advice, whether to and what you flash to your device now is up to you, but a few minutes googling led me to this:

General search, we need firmware for the iMX6 (using the spec to find generic versions) and as most firmware searches resulted in rooted non-OEM firmware, I've added "stock" as a keyword, "not rooted" didn't help as much

I've not tried it, as I prefer to have access to apps that require root, but the above might help you in your quest.
